Raked Road King ( Before changes)

(Abear)
Got a wild hair and decided to saw the steering head off of my bike. Added 8 deg. to the rake.
That was just the begining. If you are planning to do something like this, realize that it is like a drug and you can't just quit!
I then changed fenders, wheels (chrome fatboy on back & Hogpro Vegas 21" on front), all lighting is custom, front blinker bar is hand bent and chromed with Rick Doss markers. I welded a box on the back fender to mount the billet plate holder and light. Rear blinkers are Auto-Gem and have been discontinued.
Got it all put back together and looked for something else. Sawed off my pipes, chromed lower legs & cookie cutters, Sawed off rear crash bars and welded holes and painted black.
Stepped back again, had to chrome the front calipers. Should have them by the weekend. Will have some good finished pics soon. And add some pages with pics and more detail of the steps, no time now.

Airbrush Custom Harley Davidson-1997

Airbrush Custom Harley Davidson-1997

(airbrushoptic)
This is a double tank bike and I painted a Samurai, skulls, Kanji letters and flames on the right tank, a dragon and again flames on the left, upon the owner's request, who was a Kendo fighter and very keen guy on dragons. The samurai image was obtained from a figurine brought into my studio by the owner. The back fender has a skull and the front one has flames on them. It is mostly done freehand, the paint is from Glasurit 55 series and the airbrushes I used for this one are a single action Sata Graph/Z/Universal 0,2mm, and a double action Sata Graph 3 again 0,2mm.
Polishing the Aluminum and Chrome Parts

Polishing the Aluminum and Chrome Parts

(Justin)
This sportster has a lot of aluminum and it all needs polishing. In particular, the cam, primary, and transmission covers, the fork sliders, brake calipers, master cylinder, and the rocker box covers. Many of the chrome parts are really beat to hell, especially the pipes.
Repairing the Brake Systems

Repairing the Brake Systems

(Justin)
Neither brake was working very well, but the rear was almost nonexistent. The rear master cylinder cover is broken, the rear brake line has a tear in the outer rubber layer, and the master cylinder was empty except for some sludge. The guy who sold it to me mentioned that the front brakes might need a rebuild as well.
Teardown, Repair, and Repaint

Teardown, Repair, and Repaint

(Justin)
After a few short but eventful rides leaving oil, gas, and bike parts all over the road, it was time to garage the bike and fix everything broken, plus repaint the sheetmetal.

This is how the bike looked when I picked it up. The engine is a 74" ironhead stroker and the top end was just rebuilt by a shop. Paint is ugly and needs redone. No horn, mirror, signals, or license plate, the speedometer isn't hooked up, the starter doesn't work, and the brakes need to be rebuilt.
Finally put back together!!!

Finally put back together!!!

(Justin)
After almost 4 months of grinding, welding, sandblasting, cutting, fabricating, sanding, polishing, priming, painting and re-painting, rewiring, re-constructing the fuel lines, and rebuilding the entire brake systems, I finally got it all put back together, put in the oil and gas, and started it up last night.
1968 Sprint custom restoration

1968 Sprint custom restoration

(KCLectric)
Currently in the process of restoring a 1968 Aermacchi/Harley Sprint SS. While most of it will be stock I have done some customizing to it using actual Harley parts that were not originally intended for this bike.

Progress Update 5/3/05

At this point all of the paint and old filler is gone. I've ground down the ugly weld seams on the oil tank and am currently in the process of adding bondo filler to the tanks and rear fender. I'm also working on taking apart and repairing the brake calipers and rear master cylinder, and polishing some of the chrome and aluminum parts.
Fixing the Starter

Fixing the Starter

(Justin)
The first project on this bike was to get it started. The engine would only push-start because the old starter had all the gears chewed off its armature. I replaced the armature but the starter motor still would not crank the engine. So I replaced it with a high-torque gear reduction starter that is a drop-in replacement for the OEM Prestolite motor, and costs $200 (not much more than an OEM replacement). That didn't start it either, so I replaced the battery and the engine fired to life. Maybe the stock motor could have started the engine just fine if it'd had the new battery but I do appreciate the stronger starter on cold starts.
Repairing the gas tank seam

Repairing the gas tank seam

(Justin)
I got a little too ambitious with the angle grinder trying to clean up the line along its weld seam, and ground all the way through it. After hours of welding, brazing, and grinding the small pinholes would not go away so I decided to fill them with bondo on the outside and use a POR-15 motorcycle tank sealer kit on both tanks, which will also remove and prevent rust. The kit is around $33 on por15.com.
Shooting the Primer

Shooting the Primer

(Justin)
I'm using a black, 2-part high fill polyester primer. At first I was shooting with an older DeVilbiss JGA-502 siphon fed sprayer, but then I switched to a new inexpensive HVLP gun from harbor freight. The paint I'll be using is a gloss black basecoat/clearcoat combination consisting of Sherwin Automotive Ultra 7000 and Western brand clearcoat.
